Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a member of the Zingiberaceae family. It is a flowering plant haveing red flowers and the root or rhizome is commonly used in traditional medicine and Asian cuisine. Beneficial for gastroi-ntestinal relief (colic, upset stomach, gas, diarrhoea), morning sickness, motion sickness, nausea caused by cancer treatment, nausea and vomiting after surgery, and to stimulate appetite. It contains antioxidants including gingerols, shogaols, zingerones. Ginger is considered anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, ant-iviral and anti-parasitic. Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition has demonstrated in vitro and in vivo anticancer activity of ginger, suggesting it may be effective in the management of prostate cancer.
