New season’s Conference pears just in from Holland!
Perhaps the most widely grown pear in North-West Europe, the Conference pear is a varietal developed by Thomas Rivers and was first exibited at the British National Pear Conference in 1895. It made such a good impression there due to its good flavour and excellent storage characteristics that it was named after the event.
They are also the pears chosen for poaching recipes as their firm flesh takes well to the gentle cooking in spices. See recipe here from the famous ‘River Cottage’ series.
